Melbourne New Year’s Eve

melbourne new year's eveMelbourne is sick and tired of standing in the shadow of what is usually considered the pre-eminent New Year’s Eve locale in Australia, Sydney. The New Year’s Eve party in Melbourne this December is set to attract over half a million people through spectacular fireworks displays, DJs, and multimedia show countdowns – and with a budget of $3 million, you’d sure like to hope it is indeed spectacular.

The aim is to make New Year’s Even bigger and better than ever. There will be five main sites spread out across the city to avoid safety concerns and increase the ease of public access. Free music from Melbourne’s top DJ’s combined with visuals, pyrotechnic effects and a stream of multi-media will kickstart the evening at 9pm and build the tension towards the final minutes of 2013.

The four midnight live venues are Docklands, Flagstaff Gardens, Treasury Gardens and Kings Domain. There will also be an Early Eve from 9.30pm at Yarra Park, with a family fireworks display perfect for the littlies.

Then as the clocks strike midnight, the entire city will erupt into a dazzling sea of colour and vibrant explosions. Seven and a half tonnes of fireworks from various locations will set the midnight sky alight, perfectly visible from each of the four vantage points.

According to the Lord Mayor Robert Doyle, “it will create a whole carpet of wonderful fireworks to bring in the New Year”.

Cr Doyle said there would a large police presence on the night to ensure the utmost safety and keep the event alcohol free. The other focus is on ensuring people can easily get in and out of the event via public transport. All visitors are heavily encouraged to catch public transport, which is made easier by the fact that all New Year’s Eve venues are directly adjacent to train stations.

Visitors are also encouraged to walk to the venue if possible, making it the perfect excuse to stay in luxury Melbourne apartment accommodation. Rather than following out the multitudes of people making their way at a turtle’s pace back on to the trains and eventually on to their way home, simply cross the street to a convenient Docklands apartment hotel. Melbourne’s new and improved New Year’s Eve celebrations is well worth the trip regardless of how far away you hail from. Whether overseas, interstate or around the corner, make the night, the week or the month’s holiday easier and more enjoyable by staying at Grand Hotel Melbourne.
