A Medical Holiday with a Difference

“A medical holiday with a difference,”that’s what Janice called it. And really it was an ingenious idea.

There were five of us; all Sydney University Medical Students. We’d helped each other through the long, painful process of our degree. But now loomed the largest obstacle of them all – our final internship.

All of us were lucky to be assigned the Royal North Shore Hospital for our internship (though Janice said she’d pulled some strings). It was nice to know the others were there, even if we couldn’t assist each other.

There was one problem: Over the years of our degree most of us had gravitated to living close to the University. The Royal North Shore, however, is nowhere near Sydney University. Granted, for the time of our internship we could commute. But that could mean anywhere up to an hour and a half of travelling time. At the end of a long day on our feet, in the wards, that’s a lot to ask.

Everyone groaned at the idea of this time being taken from us. It was Janice who proposed the solution.

Sydney’s Urban Hotel is walking distance from the Royal North Shore. It’s quiet, comfortable and convenient. Why not, for the time of our internship, take some rooms and come and go as we please?9259c6eab127a2d4d2ba4d65302fc513

It was a brilliant idea! We’d have zero travel time, zero interference in our studies, zero cooking and cleaning, and we’d be able to get together when our shifts permitted. For the few weeks of our internship it was certainly worth the expense. This was really our last make-or-break exam. If we passed this we’d be Doctors and in a position recoup the money very quickly.

Sydney’s Urban Hotel has long been used by families with loved ones at the Royal North Shore. I don’t understand why Medical Students don’t use it for the same purpose? It is peaceful, beautiful and ideal for the time-poor student. It allowed us to devote ourselves to our studies and internships. It allowed us to relax as soon as we walked through its doors.

Not only did we stay at the Urban Sydney during our internship, we stayed a few days longer to celebrate our final pass. Every year or two we organise a get-together. Wherever we are in Australia, we fly to Sydney, stay at the Urban and catch up.

About Sam Oldfield

Growing up in Santa Cruz, California, I was a keen surfer and beach junkie from early on. My first overseas trip was to the Caribbean, and I've been chasing the summer sun ever since. I wrapped up my media degree at uni, and decided to move to Australia. The land downunder is full of beaches, babes and brilliant adventures. I'm just hitch-hiking my way around this sunny paradise, one travel blog at a time.
